Room of the week
This apartment, featured in an old Architectural Digest story about a former industrial loft on Great Jones Street designed as an “ode to California” has invaded my brain as direction for what I imagine for my own home IN California. Architecturally it would require high ceilings, exposed beams, skylights, and a new wood-framed window, but all that aside. The cabinets are simple, fronted with chrome doors and affixed with butcher block counters. It looks like the lighting is a combo of spot, so let’s assume some under-cabinet lighting for actual food prep. This kitchen is a simple concept executed with beautiful precision, in part because of those Jasper Morrison stools: real lookers.
I’m showing my hand here, but worth setting auction alerts for these bad boys. A set of four similar Hi Pad stools sold at auction for 173 euros (sob!) in June, and the Modern Archive recently had a slightly different spec, also in a set of four, for $595 (also now sold). If you’re buying new, you’re going to want the stainless steel legs with Panno wool upholstery in that bright red-orange numbered 457.
A theory about that bright red-orange…
Tomato red is partout in fashion this year, and while I would argue red is FOREVER and not a trend, per se, I assign its current popularity to a mindset inhabited by a certain age of elder Millennial women who are now influencing, if not leading, said fashion industry. And that mindset is: Essie Clambake. (Watch for this color to crop up in home/furniture retail in Fall 2024.)

Worlds collide! Art director Leanne Shapton engaged Rachel Comey to design elevated merch for the New York Review of Books—and I am highly enamored with this two-sided mesh tote bag featuring illustrations by house fave Jon Klassen as well as a painting by Andrew Kuo. And on the topic of Rachel Comey… Her new San Francisco store—on Fillmore, designed by the divine Charles de Lisle—opens in late October. The local lady-set is chomping at the bit, myself very much included.
October prompts for life and work from Moon Lists—as if you needed a reminder that I live in ~California~ now. Writer Leigh Patterson cites as inspiration Ruth Asawa’s studio practice, which she maintained while mothering six children, and I am duly inspired.
A self-indulgent fantasy shopping list that may or may not coincide with my birthday this week: broken-in Jamie Haller suede loafers (honestly, the toe box on these = perfection), Afra and Tobia Scarpa’s circa-1982 Celestia ceiling light for Flos, a vintage copy of Arranging Things (the original, written by the OG Leonard Koren), Japanese sunglasses from Time Frame in SF, a classic USM filing cabinet, and a Danielle Dimston drawing from Municipal Bonds gallery.
Until next time,
Kelsey
PS. At least eight of you bought that Marimekko dress (!), which means we’ve got an official uniform for the commune.
